A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking the suspension of the candidacy of National Citizen Party (NCP) nominee Nahid Islam over allegations of dual citizenship. The petition was submitted by Jatiya Party–backed candidate Shamim Ahmed for the Dhaka-11 constituency, naming the Chief Election Commissioner, the Election Commission Secretary, the concerned returning officer, and Nahid Islam as respondents. According to the petition, Nahid Islam obtained citizenship of the Caribbean island nation of Dominica on April 20, 2025, which, the petitioner claims, conflicts with Bangladesh’s election laws. On this basis, the court has been requested to suspend his candidacy. The Dhaka-11 constituency consists of wards 21, 22, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, and 42 of the Dhaka North City Corporation in the Gulshan area, along with ward 23 of Sabujbagh. The constituency has a total of 439,078 voters, including 222,877 male voters, 216,198 female voters, and three third-gender voters. Several candidates from different political parties and independent backgrounds are contesting in this seat. They include BNP’s M A Qayyum, NCP’s Md. Nahid Islam, independent candidate Kohinur Akter Bithi, Bangladesh Cultural Liberation Alliance’s Kazi Md. Shahidullah, Gono Forum’s Abdul Kader, Gono Odhikar Parishad’s Arifur Rahman, Bangladesh Republican Party’s Zakir Hossain, National People’s Party’s Mizanur Rahman, Jatiya Party’s Shamim Ahmed, and Islami Andolon Bangladesh’s Sheikh Md. Fazle Bari Masud. With the upcoming parliamentary election approaching, the constituency is considered politically significant, and the legal challenge over the candidacy has sparked fresh discussions in the election arena. The court is expected to determine the next course of action after hearing the petition, which could affect both the candidate’s position and the overall contest in the constituency.
