Bangladesh will return to One Day International cricket after nearly four months as they face former world champions Pakistan in the first match of a three-match ODI series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur today. The Tigers last played an ODI series in October last year against the West Indies at home, where they secured a 2–1 series victory. After that series, the team remained largely engaged in the T20 format with preparations focused on the upcoming T20 World Cup. However, Bangladesh did not participate in that tournament held in India due to security concerns. Now the focus of the team has shifted to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. To qualify directly for that global event, teams must remain within the top eight of the ICC ODI rankings, but Bangladesh currently sit in tenth position. As a result, every ODI series has become crucial for the team in their attempt to improve their ranking and secure direct qualification. The upcoming series against Pakistan is therefore considered highly important for the Tigers. Under the leadership of captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Bangladesh will return to the 50-over format after nearly four months. The remaining two matches of the series will also be played in Mirpur on March 13 and March 15. Pakistan have arrived in Bangladesh to play an ODI series after a gap of 11 years, with their last bilateral ODI series in the country taking place in 2015. Although the two sides have faced each other in several international tournaments such as the Champions Trophy, Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup during this period, a bilateral series in Bangladesh has been absent for more than a decade. The visiting side includes several new and relatively inexperienced players, yet Bangladesh are not taking the opposition lightly. Captain Miraz has acknowledged that Pakistan remain a strong side in international cricket and defeating them will require a disciplined and determined performance from his team. Historically, Pakistan have dominated the ODI rivalry between the two nations. Since their first encounter in 1986, Bangladesh and Pakistan have faced each other in 39 ODI matches, with Bangladesh winning only five while Pakistan have won 34. Despite that record, Bangladesh will take confidence from playing in familiar home conditions and from the support of local fans at the Mirpur stadium. In recent times several young Bangladeshi cricketers have shown promising performances, raising expectations among supporters ahead of the series. For Pakistan, the series also represents an important opportunity to test new combinations and prepare for future international tournaments. Both teams will aim to assess their strengths and refine their strategies as they build towards major competitions ahead. As a result, today’s opening match in Mirpur has generated significant excitement and anticipation among cricket fans who are eager to see how the contest unfolds between the two sides.
