Bangladesh’s Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has announced that a nationwide canal excavation and tree plantation program will begin soon, under which fish farming will be introduced in the canals and various forest, fruit, and medicinal trees will be planted along the canal banks. Speaking at a meeting with ministry officials at the Secretariat on Sunday, the minister said the initiative will enhance environmental beauty while also helping meet part of the population’s nutritional and protein needs. According to him, the government, elected with strong public support, has adopted a five-year plan to excavate around 20,000 kilometers of canals and plant approximately 2.5 million trees across the country as part of its development agenda. The program is scheduled to officially begin on March 16, starting from Dinajpur. The minister urged all concerned officials and staff members to implement the initiative with dedication and sincerity, adding that successful execution of the project would contribute to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and the improvement of local livelihoods.
