After securing a landslide victory in the 13th national parliamentary election, the BNP-led government has begun taking steps to implement its election manifesto commitments, adopting a special six-month action plan aimed at delivering key pledges made to voters. Within a short time of forming the government, a number of public welfare initiatives have been placed at the top of the agenda, including canal excavation programs, the introduction of family cards for vulnerable households, the waiver of agricultural loans, honorariums for religious leaders, the launch of health cards and efforts to stabilize commodity prices. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has already inaugurated the Family Card distribution program in the Korail slum area of the capital, marking the beginning of a broader initiative intended to support female-headed households across the country. According to government plans, the first phase of the program has already provided cards to thousands of such households in several districts, with authorities aiming to eventually extend the benefit to every female-headed family nationwide. At the same time, in order to ease financial pressure on farmers, the government has instructed the relevant ministries to implement a waiver of agricultural loans of up to 10,000 taka including interest. As part of its development agenda, the government has also planned to formally launch a nationwide canal excavation program on March 16 in Kaharol upazila of Dinajpur district, with ministers and members of parliament simultaneously inaugurating similar activities in 54 other districts alongside local administrations. Preparations are also underway to introduce a national Health Card program aimed at improving access to healthcare services for ordinary citizens. Since taking office, the cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has repeatedly discussed the implementation of manifesto commitments in its meetings, directing ministries and relevant authorities to submit detailed action plans outlining how and when specific promises will be fulfilled. Government officials say that priority is being given to policies with the greatest public impact, particularly those related to price stability during the holy month of Ramadan, maintaining law and order, and ensuring uninterrupted electricity and energy supplies. Policymakers believe that the first few months of the administration are crucial for demonstrating visible progress to the public and strengthening confidence in the new leadership. According to administrative sources, the government has set a list of priorities for its first 180 days in office, focusing on controlling commodity prices, improving the law-and-order situation, keeping supply chains functioning smoothly, preventing potential energy shortages and ensuring safe and convenient travel for citizens during the upcoming Eid holidays. Ministries have already begun implementing a number of field-level initiatives aligned with these objectives. In addition, the government is reportedly considering longer-term plans to expand support for the agricultural sector, strengthen social safety-net programs and modernize the national healthcare system. Political observers say that the effort to move quickly on election pledges sends an important signal that the administration intends to translate campaign promises into practical policies. It may be recalled that in the parliamentary election held on February 12, the BNP secured an overwhelming majority by winning 211 out of 297 seats. Five days later, on February 17, Tarique Rahman took oath as the country’s 11th Prime Minister along with 49 ministers and state ministers. The first session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad began on March 12, marking the formal start of parliamentary activities with the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker and setting the stage for the government to advance its legislative and administrative agenda based on the commitments outlined in its election manifesto.
