Ahead of the forthcoming referendum, BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman has called on citizens of all political persuasions to cast their votes in favor of “Yes.” Addressing a massive public rally at the historic Collectorate Eidgah ground in Rangpur as the chief guest, he said Rangpur is sanctified by the blood of martyr Abu Sayeed, and safeguarding the aspirations born of the sacrifices of Abu Sayeed, Wasim, and nearly 1,400 martyrs embodied in the “July Charter” is a moral obligation of the nation. Recalling the broad public participation during the August 5 movement, he emphasized the need to preserve that unity, urging people to remain vigilant and exercise their franchise, noting that the era of night-time or sham elections has come to an end. Outlining a development vision for Rangpur, Tarique Rahman said the region is often mislabeled as poor despite being rich in potential; his party aims to rejuvenate the area by establishing agro-based industries, extending special incentives to entrepreneurs, and creating large-scale employment opportunities. He also announced plans for time-bound tax relief for local IT firms to spur technology-driven jobs. Detailing welfare initiatives for farmers and women, he said that upon assuming office, the BNP would waive farm loans up to BDT 10,000, distribute agricultural cards, provide seeds and pesticides free of cost for at least one crop cycle, and introduce a “Family Card” to strengthen women’s economic empowerment and rights. Concluding his address, he invited the crowd to share their vision; as chants of “Sheaf of Paddy” rose in response, he urged voters to proceed to polling centers after dawn prayers and peacefully exercise their voting rights so that the referendum reflects the people’s will and the country advances on a democratic path.
