The arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife has triggered serious concern from an international human rights organization, which warned that such military and political intervention by the United States may conflict with international law and the core principles of the UN Charter, potentially undermining the long-established rules-based global order and reinforcing a dangerous reliance on power, coercion, and intimidation, a trend that could motivate other countries to pursue similar unilateral actions; according to the organization, this situation significantly heightens the risk of widespread human rights violations against ordinary Venezuelan citizens, particularly if civilian protection, fair trials, due legal process, and humane treatment of detainees are not fully ensured, while also deepening political instability and social crisis within the country; it further cautioned that individuals who previously opposed human rights abuses during Maduro’s rule may now face retaliation, increasing the suffering of victims and the millions forced to flee the country, and emphasized that an independent, impartial, and credible investigation into alleged human rights violations and crimes against humanity is essential under international law to ensure accountability, deliver justice and reparations to victims, and prevent the recurrence of such abuses in the future.
