First Use of U.S. ATACMS Missiles Marks Escalation, Sparks Threats of Retaliation from Moscow
On the 1,000th day of the Russia-Ukraine war, Ukraine launched an attack on Russian territory using U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles for the first time. This unprecedented move follows President Joe Biden's administration granting permission to Kyiv to use the long-range missiles, signaling a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
The attack, carried out on Tuesday night, targeted a Russian military site in the Bryansk region. Ukraine claimed it struck an ammunition depot approximately 110 kilometers (70 miles) inside Russian territory. While Kyiv provided no specific details on the weapons used, U.S. officials confirmed the deployment of ATACMS missiles in the strike.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported intercepting five out of six missiles launched, with the remnants of one causing minor damage to a military facility. The resulting fire was quickly extinguished, and no casualties were reported. Additionally, Russian forces claimed to have destroyed 42 Ukrainian drones in the south and central regions, including 32 in Bryansk.
Moscow has condemned the use of U.S. missiles, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warning that the deployment of ATACMS reflects the West’s intention to escalate the conflict. Lavrov argued that such weapons cannot operate without direct U.S. logistical support, effectively making Washington a direct participant in the war. He hinted at potential Russian retaliation in response to the strike.
Experts suggest that ATACMS, with its range of approximately 300 kilometers, could provide Ukraine with tactical leverage in protecting contested areas like the Kursk region. However, it remains less potent than Russia's hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, which have a range of up to 2,000 kilometers.
Tuesday’s strike underscores growing Western involvement in the conflict and raises questions about the potential repercussions, as both sides brace for further escalations in the months ahead.
