Two friends were killed after their motorcycle collided with a pickup van amid dense fog in Kulaura. Riyad Ahmed (22) had bought an old motorcycle just two days earlier and went out for a morning ride with his friend Javed Ahmed (20).

The accident occurred on Wednesday morning at Achurigat area on the Moulvibazar–Barlekha regional road in Kulaura.

Riyad was the son of fruit trader Nuru Mia from Bhabanipur village of Juri upazila. Javed was the son of the late Dilu Mia from Jangirai area of the same upazila.

According to police and local sources, Riyad used to run his father’s fruit shop at the Children’s Park area of the upazila headquarters. Javed and his brothers had recently opened a clothing store at Kaminiganj market. Riyad purchased the old motorcycle for Tk 70,000 two days ago. At around 7:00 am, he was heading towards Kulaura with Javed on the motorcycle. Dense fog prevailed at the time. At Achurigat, the motorcycle had a head-on collision with a fruit-laden pickup van coming from the opposite direction. Both riders died on the spot.

Police from Kulaura Police Station recovered the bodies after being informed.

After receiving the news of his son’s death, Nuru Mia rushed to Kulaura Police Station along with other family members. Crying in grief, he said, “I told my son to stay home and open the shop in the morning. I didn’t know he had gone out for a ride. The motorcycle took my son’s life.”

Kulaura Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Muhit Mia said around 11:00 am that due to dense fog, a head-on collision occurred between the pickup van and the motorcycle, resulting in the death of both motorcycle riders. Necessary legal actions will be taken in this regard.
