Local traders staged a protest at Karwan Bazar in the capital, alleging renewed attempts by a political syndicate to revive extortion and illegal control over the market. The traders expressed concern that such activities are disrupting normal business operations and creating fear among shop owners.
The protest march began in front of the Petrobangla area of Karwan Bazar on Sunday night and concluded at the fruit market section. During the march, protesters chanted slogans demanding justice and an end to extortion practices.
Claims of Threats and Misinformation
At a brief rally following the march, speakers stated that individuals involved in past extortion and occupation are once again trying to organize themselves. According to the traders, certain influential figures are backing these efforts, leading to threats and intimidation against business owners.
They also alleged that false propaganda is being spread against several political leaders in an attempt to malign a rival political party and create confusion among traders.
Warning of Stronger Action
The traders noted that although extortionists went into hiding after August 5, recent activities suggest attempts to regain influence in the market. They warned that any effort to reintroduce extortion, occupation, or syndicate control at Karwan Bazar would be firmly resisted, and stronger protest programs may be announced if necessary.
