Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a ceasefire and will begin withdrawing troops from their shared border, according to Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He shared this update during a speech at the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking event held in Malaysia on Friday.

In his address, Prime Minister Anwar said both nations have agreed in principle to halt hostilities but have requested some time to implement the withdrawal due to existing military deployments at the frontier.

He said he personally communicated with the acting Prime Minister of Thailand and the Prime Minister of Cambodia to express Malaysia’s concern over the escalating tensions. “I am grateful that both leaders responded with respect and understanding. This reflects the value they place on Malaysia's position and our consistent commitment to peace and regional stability,” Anwar stated.

The discussions between Anwar and the two Southeast Asian leaders took place on Thursday (July 24), as tensions at the border between Thailand and Cambodia raised concerns among neighboring nations.

Prime Minister Anwar emphasized that Malaysia’s approach stems from its role as a neutral, peace-seeking nation with a strong reputation in the region. He noted that the ceasefire agreement is a sign of mutual respect among the countries involved and an important step toward de-escalation.

He also acknowledged that while the decision to withdraw troops has been made, logistical challenges remain, as both sides need time to relocate forces stationed in sensitive areas along the border.

Earlier, Anwar had welcomed the initial positive response from both governments toward ceasefire talks. He made phone calls to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on Thursday evening to convey Malaysia’s concerns and encourage restraint.

The calls came amid reports of increasing military tension and potential conflict near the Thailand-Cambodia border. Malaysia’s diplomatic intervention is being seen as a constructive and stabilizing influence in the region.

As of now, no specific timeline has been provided for the troop withdrawals, but Anwar expressed hope that both countries will proceed in good faith and uphold their commitment to a peaceful resolution. Further developments are expected to follow as discussions between the involved nations continue.
