BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has condemned the July Savar incident as a brutal massacre that, in his words, surpasses even the savagery of Karbala. Speaking virtually on Wednesday, July 30, at a commemorative event titled "Narokiyo Ashulia" (The Hellish Ashulia), Rahman addressed the families of workers, students, and civilians who lost their lives during the political turmoil.

The event was held in Shreepur, Ashulia, marking the anniversary of what BNP terms as the July-August people’s uprising—an episode the party regards as both a tragedy and a symbol of resistance. Rahman stated that those who were burned alive in Savar were victims of a state-sponsored atrocity aimed at crushing dissent.

He claimed the people did not take to the streets simply for a regime change, but to establish a democratic and just state. Emphasizing the BNP’s commitment to electoral reform and justice, he reiterated the party’s stance on holding free and fair elections as a non-negotiable principle.

According to Rahman, BNP envisions a government that ensures political stability and upholds democratic values. He criticized the ruling party for allegedly centralizing power in the hands of a few, arguing that the citizens have not spent the past 15 years protesting and sacrificing their lives only to see the country controlled by an elite minority.

Raising questions about the ruling party’s intentions, he asked whether the government is genuinely prepared to transfer power back to the people in a responsible manner. Rahman also warned that in a time when extremism and radicalism are showing signs of resurgence, the authorities must exercise maximum vigilance and responsibility.

In his concluding remarks, the BNP leader expressed solidarity with the families of those who were killed and assured them that their sacrifices would not be forgotten. He pledged that a future BNP-led government would honor the spirit of their struggle by restoring democratic governance and accountability across all state institutions.
