In Tangail, Maryam Mukaddas Misti, a student representative and coordinator, has been released after signing a bond apologizing for illegally occupying the residence of a former Member of Parliament (MP). The incident, which sparked widespread criticism, involved Misti housing 17 mentally ill individuals in the six-story building owned by Advocate Joaherul Islam, former MP of Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur) and general secretary of the district Awami League.
The illegal occupation occurred on Saturday (March 8), drawing national attention and prompting immediate action from the administration. By 10:30 PM that night, a joint force of the army and police, led by Tangail Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Ruhul Amin Sharif, raided the property in the town’s Chhoto Kalibari area and freed it from illegal occupation. The 17 individuals were rescued and are now being rehabilitated under government care.
In her bond, Misti admitted to committing a crime by attempting to house mentally ill individuals in someone else’s property without legal authority. She also acknowledged that her social media posts had caused instability and took responsibility for her actions. “I apologize for my negative and illegal activities,” she stated, promising not to engage in any future offenses, including posting inflammatory content on social media or illegally occupying private or government property.
Executive Magistrate Ruhul Amin Sharif confirmed that Misti was released after signing the bond, which included signatures from five witnesses, including her husband. He noted that the decision to release her was influenced by International Women’s Day and the holy month of Ramadan, offering her an opportunity to reform.
The incident has raised questions about the misuse of social media and the challenges of addressing mental health issues in the community. Authorities have warned that any violation of the bond will result in legal action against Misti.
