Strict administrative action has been taken against a doctor accused of neglecting official responsibilities to treat patients at a private chamber, said Bangladesh Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain. Speaking at a press conference held at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare conference room at the Secretariat on Thursday, the minister said that Dr. Rajesh Majumdar, a junior consultant (pediatrics) at a district headquarters hospital, was found visiting a nearby private chamber to see patients on February 26 while he was supposed to be performing his official duties. The matter came to the government’s attention after the incident was captured on camera by a journalist. As part of the disciplinary measures taken against him, the doctor’s medical license has been suspended for six months. In addition, he has been served a notice asking him to explain within three days why he should not be temporarily suspended under the Government Servants Discipline Rules. The ministry has also instructed the Directorate General of Health Services to submit a detailed report for further departmental action. The health minister warned that any doctor found neglecting government duty to provide private treatment will face similar strict consequences in the future. He added that monitoring has been strengthened in various places to prevent such irregularities and that intelligence surveillance may also be conducted if necessary. According to the minister, the main objective of the government’s action is to ensure proper healthcare services in public hospitals and to increase accountability and responsibility among doctors working in the government health system.
