The state’s appeal seeking enhanced punishment against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who were convicted in connection with the July–August 2024 genocide case, is scheduled to be heard today. Although they were sentenced to life imprisonment on one charge of crimes against humanity, the prosecution has appealed to secure the maximum penalty, including the death sentence. The matter has been listed on the cause list of the regular full bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on Tuesday (February 24, 2026). Earlier, on February 1, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division, Justice Md. Rezaul Haque, fixed this date for hearing. On that day, then Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam appeared on behalf of the state. The case was subsequently placed before the regular bench. On December 15, the prosecution formally filed the appeal with the relevant branch of the Appellate Division, presenting eight arguments in favor of increasing the sentence. Notably, on November 17, 2025, International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced them to death on one charge and to life imprisonment on another. In the same case, former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun received a five-year sentence after cooperating as a state witness by providing information and evidence. Since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, amid a mass uprising, Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have remained absconding, and the trial proceedings were conducted in their absence.
