In the 13th National Parliamentary Election, seven rebel candidates of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have won their respective constituencies. All of them contested as independent candidates after failing to secure party nominations, and were widely known in their areas as “rebel” contenders. Voting was held in 299 constituencies on Thursday, but polling in Sherpur-3 was suspended following the death of a candidate. According to unofficial results, outcomes from 297 constituencies have been received, of which BNP and its allied parties secured 212 seats, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies obtained 77 seats. In addition, Islami Andolan Bangladesh won one seat, and independent candidates secured seven seats. In Brahmanbaria-2, independent candidate Rumin Farhana achieved a landslide victory with 117,495 votes, surpassing her nearest rival by 37,568 votes. In Tangail-3, independent candidate Lutfur Rahman Khan Azad won with 107,901 votes on the motorcycle symbol. In Kishoreganj-5, independent candidate Sheikh Mujibur Rahman secured victory with 79,604 votes. In Chandpur-4, independent Abdul Hannan won with 74,175 votes. In Cumilla-7, independent candidate Atikul Alam Shawon secured 91,690 votes to win. In Mymensingh-1, independent Salman Omar was elected with 107,241 votes. In Dinajpur-5, independent candidate A. Z. M. Rezwanul Haque won with 114,484 votes. All of these candidates were previously associated with BNP politics and chose to contest independently after being denied party nominations; as a result, they were expelled from the party. Their victories demonstrate that even without official party backing, locally influential leaders can secure significant electoral success as independent candidates, making their wins a notable aspect of the overall election outcome.
