The High Court has declared safe and clean drinking water a fundamental right for every citizen of Bangladesh under the Constitution. The full 16-page verdict was released on Thursday.
In its ruling, the court stated that under Article 32 of the Constitution, the right to life cannot be ensured without access to safe and potable water. Therefore, providing safe drinking water to all citizens is a constitutional obligation of the state.
Earlier, the High Court had issued a suo motu rule seeking clarification on whether ensuring safe drinking water is a state responsibility and whether access to such water can be recognized as a fundamental right.
After final hearings, the court concluded that access to safe and clean drinking water is an essential component of fundamental rights, and the state must take effective measures to ensure this right for all citizens.
The verdict is being seen as a landmark decision in safeguarding public health, environmental protection, and citizens’ constitutional rights.
