Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia on Friday of launching a drone strike on the security structures of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant’s damaged fourth unit, claiming the attack caused significant damage.
However, the Kremlin swiftly rejected these allegations, labeling them as "provocation." Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, denied the claims, stating that the Russian military had not carried out such an attack. Peskov suggested that it was likely another provocation by the Ukrainian government, which, according to him, frequently engages in such actions, sometimes without backing down from them.
The incident occurred during the ongoing Munich Security Conference, where discussions were being held on the ongoing war in Ukraine. Senior officials from the United States, Ukraine, and Europe were present at the event.
Following the attack, Zelensky addressed the Munich conference, stating that the drone strike had damaged the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant’s (NPP) security structures, though the fire caused by the strike had been extinguished. He described the attack as a "global security threat" and emphasized that the security infrastructure at Chernobyl had been built with international cooperation.
Zelensky also called on the international community to put more pressure on Russia. He urged all nations that value global security to unite and press for accountability from Russia for its actions.
Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that radiation levels at Chernobyl remained normal following the attack. The site continues to be monitored regularly for safety.
