Bangladesh Railway’s Eastern Zone recently carried out an extensive ticket inspection operation across 64 trains in an effort to strengthen passenger discipline, improve revenue collection, and reinforce the culture of purchasing tickets before travel. During the drive, 94 ticket examiners reviewed a total of 2,735 tickets and identified 1,945 passengers traveling without valid tickets, resulting in the collection of BDT 424,910 in combined fares and penalties. According to railway officials, the purpose of the campaign extended beyond financial recovery; it aimed to enhance awareness among passengers, ensure greater security within trains, and reduce long-standing irregularities in railway travel behavior. While the operation revealed that passengers carrying valid tickets showed comparatively responsible compliance, the persistence of ticketless travel remains a longstanding challenge for the rail system. Authorities argue that consistent enforcement can gradually shift passenger habits, strengthen rule adherence, and contribute to broader modernization objectives. As rail transport continues to regain popularity as a safer and more affordable alternative to road travel, the sector still faces expectations for improved infrastructure, service quality, and discipline. Officials have indicated that similar drives will continue with stricter monitoring and penalties, positioning railway as a more efficient, regulated, and trusted component of the national transportation network.
