Fishermen urged to seek immediate shelter as low-pressure system causes strong winds over northern Bay of Bengal and coastal areas

Dhaka, July 1 —
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a local signal number 3 warning for the seaports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra, urging vessels to proceed with caution due to adverse weather conditions. The alert was announced on Tuesday in a special bulletin that outlined the prevailing atmospheric disturbances affecting the northern Bay of Bengal and surrounding coastal regions.

The low-pressure system currently situated over the Ganges region of West Bengal and its adjoining areas has intensified the wind patterns across the northern Bay of Bengal. This phenomenon has caused a significant variation in air pressure, leading to gusty and potentially stormy winds sweeping over the Bay as well as the coastal zones and seaports of Bangladesh.

As a result, port authorities in the four key maritime locations have been instructed to hoist the number 3 local signal, indicating heightened caution for marine activities. The signal advises vessels and fishermen to be alert to the deteriorating weather conditions and adjust their operations accordingly.

Fishermen operating in the northern Bay of Bengal, including all fishing boats and trawlers, have been urged to return to safe harbors without delay. They are advised to remain in secure locations until further instructions are issued by the authorities.

The Meteorological Department emphasized the need for continuous monitoring of weather developments as the low-pressure system moves, warning of the possibility of strong gusts and squalls over the maritime and adjacent coastal areas. Mariners and port operators are being advised to stay updated with real-time weather reports to ensure safety at sea.

This advisory is issued in the context of Bangladesh’s monsoon season, where such low-pressure systems commonly lead to rough sea conditions and pose risks to fishing and shipping activities. Authorities remain on alert to manage any emergencies arising from the weather disturbances.

Local communities dependent on fishing and maritime trade have been cautioned to exercise prudence during this period, as sudden weather changes could impact navigation and port operations.

The government continues to prioritize the safety of maritime personnel and coastal populations through timely dissemination of weather warnings and coordinated response measures.
