After being sworn in as the 11th Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman has retained three key portfolios under his direct supervision.
According to an official notification issued Tuesday night, the Prime Minister will oversee the Cabinet Division, the Ministry of Defence, and the Armed Forces Division. Other ministries and divisions have been distributed among members of the newly formed cabinet in accordance with the Rules of Business.
Earlier in the afternoon, Tarique Rahman formally took oath as the country’s 11th Prime Minister. Immediately after assuming office, he appointed 25 full ministers and 24 state ministers. The distribution of portfolios was later confirmed through an official gazette notification.
Government sources indicate that retaining these crucial portfolios will allow the Prime Minister to exercise direct oversight over policymaking, national security, and military affairs. Keeping the Defence Ministry and the Armed Forces Division under his authority is seen as a move to ensure swift decision-making on security-related matters.
The new cabinet comprises a total of 49 ministers and state ministers, along with appointed advisers. With the allocation of ministries, the government’s administrative structure has now become fully operational.
Political observers believe that by holding onto the most strategic ministries, the Prime Minister aims to maintain strong control over governance and national security, while distributing other responsibilities to ensure balance within the cabinet and alliance partners.
