Parliamentary Election: Fines of BDT 2.3 Million in 212 Cases for Code of Conduct Violations

A total of 212 cases have been filed across the country and fines amounting to BDT 2.298 million have been imposed over alleged violations of the election code of conduct ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, according to election authorities. From January 8 to February 4, executive magistrates identified 353 instances of code of conduct violations in different areas and filed the cases accordingly. Director (Operations) of the National Identity Registration Division and Member Secretary of the Central Coordination Committee for the referendum and the 13th parliamentary election, Md. Saiful Islam, said legal measures are being taken to ensure a fair electoral environment and that regular drives are underway against violations of the code. He stated that a total of BDT 2.298 million in fines had been collected through the 212 cases. In addition, the Electoral Inquiry and Adjudication Committee conducted summary trials in 15 complaints related to various offences and imposed an additional BDT 105,500 in fines. Sources concerned said that out of a total of 344 complaints, 143 were filed against officials at different levels, while 201 complaints were related to violations of the election code and other irregularities. Election officials said surveillance has been strengthened at the field level to ensure a free and credible election, with coordinated operations involving law enforcement agencies and the administration. They added that swift action would be taken against any code violations before and after the polls, and stricter measures would be adopted if necessary. Authorities remain on alert to maintain a transparent and competitive electoral atmosphere and to ensure a level playing field for all candidates.
