John Carreyrou, the New York Times journalist renowned for exposing the Theranos scandal, has filed a lawsuit against six major artificial intelligence (AI) companies.
The lawsuit alleges that Google, Meta, OpenAI, X.AI (Elon Musk), Anthropic, and Perplexity used Carreyrou’s and five other authors’ books to train their chatbots without permission, constituting copyright infringement.
Carreyrou and five co-authors jointly filed the case on Monday in a federal court in California regarding the book “Bad Blood.” According to the complaint, the AI companies copied the authors’ work without consent and used it as input for large language models (LLMs).
While lawsuits over copyright violations against tech companies have occurred previously, this marks the first case filed against Elon Musk’s X.AI. The legal firm Freeman Normand Friedland is representing Carreyrou. So far, none of the accused companies have issued an official statement.
