The National Citizen Party (NCP) has plunged into a serious internal crisis following its move toward a seat-sharing arrangement with Jamaat-e-Islami ahead of the 13th parliamentary election. The initiative has triggered strong resistance within the party, leading to resignations and formal objections from senior leaders.

As negotiations with Jamaat reached an advanced stage, senior joint member secretary and political council member Tasnim Jara announced her resignation from the party. Earlier, another senior leader known for opposing Jamaat also stepped down.

Around 30 party leaders submitted a memorandum to NCP convener Nahid Islam, urging the leadership to refrain from forming any political alliance with Jamaat. They warned that such an alliance would weaken the party’s moral stance, damage its credibility, and undermine its centrist political identity.

Founded on the promise of “moderate politics,” the NCP initially explored seat-sharing talks with the BNP, but those efforts failed. The party later turned to Jamaat, a move that caused unrest within its recently formed three-party alliance, as other partners expressed reluctance to align with major political blocs.

Party sources indicate that discussions with Jamaat involved a possible allocation of around 30 seats, and a draft list of potential candidates was prepared. However, the emergence of these details intensified internal opposition, pushing the party into deeper turmoil.

With disagreements growing over ideology, leadership decisions, and electoral strategy, the NCP now faces uncertainty about its political direction as negotiations with Jamaat continue.
