BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has declared that his party will never allow Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to engage in politics in Bangladesh again, accusing her of authoritarian rule and undermining the country's democratic foundations. Speaking at a student rally in Dhaka’s Shahbagh on Sunday, he called for a collective pledge to resist fascism and rebuild the nation through self-reliance and courage.
The rally was organized by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, BNP’s student wing, as part of a month-long program to mark the first anniversary of the July Uprising. Addressing the gathering, Mirza Fakhrul urged young party members to remain steadfast in their struggle for democracy and justice, recalling the sacrifices made by student activists over the past years.
He said that Bangladesh is now standing at a critical crossroads, where a new dawn is breaking. Describing this moment as a turning point, he stated that a fresh opportunity has arrived for the nation to reinvent itself and move toward a brighter, freer future.
Reflecting on the role of student activists, Mirza Fakhrul noted that many had endured extreme repression, including imprisonment and torture. He remarked that it is difficult to find a Chhatra Dal member who has not been incarcerated or persecuted at some point in recent years. He honored the memory of those lost during past protests, especially recalling the sacrifices made during last year’s uprising on the same date.
Turning his attention to Sheikh Hasina, Mirza Fakhrul alleged that she has taken refuge in neighboring India along with her supporters, from where, he claimed, she continues to issue threats and attempts to destabilize the political environment in Bangladesh. He called upon the rally participants to take an oath not to permit her return to the country’s political stage.
Looking ahead, the BNP leader expressed optimism regarding a national election scheduled for February. He voiced hope that the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, would return to Bangladesh and participate in the election, ultimately emerging victorious. Mirza Fakhrul framed this prospective election as a critical juncture for the country's future and called on supporters to prepare for it with unity and resolve.
The student gathering drew a large crowd, with enthusiastic participation from members of Chhatra Dal and senior BNP leaders. The event served both as a remembrance of past struggles and a rallying cry for renewed political momentum. Mirza Fakhrul concluded his address by reaffirming the BNP’s commitment to restoring democracy in Bangladesh and ending what he described as a regime of tyranny and fear.
