Solar Zenith Occurs Above the Holy Kaaba, Causing Complete Shadow Disappearance in Mecca

The Holy Kaaba in Mecca experienced a rare astronomical phenomenon on Tuesday, July 15, as the sun positioned itself directly overhead. During this moment, no shadow was cast by the Kaaba or any surrounding structures, creating a visually striking and scientifically significant event.

According to a statement from the Jeddah Astronomy Association, the sun aligned in a perfectly straight line with the Kaaba, resulting in the complete disappearance of all shadows in its vicinity. The association explained that when the sun reaches this position, anyone observing the sun from anywhere on Earth can accurately determine the direction of the Qibla simply by facing toward the sun.

This occurrence takes place as the sun shifts southward from the Tropic of Cancer and crosses Mecca’s latitude, which is approximately 21.4 degrees north. Known as a Solar Zenith, this event typically happens twice a year—once in late May and again in mid-July.

Astronomers describe the Solar Zenith as a point where the sun is positioned exactly 90 degrees above a specific location, allowing no vertical structure to cast a shadow. For Mecca and the Kaaba, this moment holds particular importance, not only for its scientific interest but also for its religious relevance, as it offers an opportunity for Muslims worldwide to confirm the exact direction of the Qibla with natural precision.

The alignment emphasizes the unique geographical position of Mecca in relation to the sun’s path and is closely monitored by both astronomers and Islamic scholars. The event also draws public interest each year when the phenomenon is predicted and observed.

Tuesday’s occurrence unfolded under clear skies in Mecca, allowing observers to witness the sun’s direct position above the Kaaba without obstruction. The moment serves as a reminder of both the scientific wonders of astronomy and its cultural and religious intersections.
