In Tangail, journalists were attacked after using the term "Zubairi follower" during a live broadcast. The incident occurred at 3 PM on Sunday, December 22, while a group of Zubairi supporters were protesting outside the District Commissioner's office, demanding actions against those involved in the December 17 attack at Tongi's Ijtema ground.
The Zubairi supporters had submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, urging action against Sadeqi followers and the cessation of their activities in mosques. They had gathered to protest the alleged misconduct of the DC and SP.
During the live broadcast by DBC News, reporter Sohel Talukdar used the term "Zubairi follower," which led to an attack by the supporters. When other journalists intervened to protect Sohel, they were also attacked by the group.
Journalists including Ashikur Rahman from DBC News, Masud Rana from Channel 24, Alok Kumar Das from Channel S, and Molla Toffajjal from BDnews were injured in the attack. The injured journalists expressed shock and condemnation, demanding that the perpetrators be brought to justice.
The Tangail Press Club's president Zafar Ahmed and general secretary Nasir Uddin strongly condemned the incident.
Zubairi elder Mufti Abdur Rahman later stated that the incident was a misunderstanding and confirmed that the matter had been resolved with the journalists and their leaders.
Efforts to contact the Officer-in-Charge of Tangail Model Police Station, Mohammad Tanveen Hossain, for further comment were unsuccessful, as calls went unanswered.
