The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has shown the arrest of a Bangabhaban official in connection with the hacking of the X (formerly Twitter) account of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman.

The arrested individual has been identified as Mohammad Sarwar-e-Alam, an assistant programmer at Bangabhaban. The DB said his involvement in the incident would be confirmed only after investigation and forensic examination of seized digital devices.

DB Chief and Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam disclosed the information at a press briefing held at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Wednesday night.

According to the DB chief, Jamaat-e-Islami filed a General Diary (GD) with Hatirjheel Police Station over the alleged hacking of its ameer’s X account. As the matter involved cybercrime, the GD was handed over to the DB for further investigation.

Shafiqul Islam said Sarwar-e-Alam was brought to the DB office from the Motijheel area for questioning as part of the investigation. Subsequently, a case was filed in connection with the incident, and the DB was assigned to probe the matter.

He added that the suspect’s mobile phone, computer hard drives, and other electronic devices were seized during the interrogation. “For the sake of a transparent and impartial investigation, forensic analysis of the seized devices is essential,” he said.

Responding to questions about Sarwar-e-Alam’s role, the DB chief stated, “It is not possible to confirm his involvement until the investigation and forensic reports are completed. Everything necessary for the investigation will be carried out.”

He also urged people not to spread misinformation on social media and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a fair investigation.

A DB official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters that Sarwar-e-Alam was shown arrested mainly due to political pressure. Preparations are underway to send him to jail through court proceedings, the official said.

The controversy began last Saturday when an English-language post containing remarks offensive to women was shared from Shafiqur Rahman’s X account. The post sparked widespread criticism on social media.

Later that night, Jamaat-e-Islami issued a statement on its official Facebook page claiming that the account had been compromised through a cyberattack. The party reiterated the claim at an emergency press conference the following day, alleging that a government email was used to carry out the hacking.

Since then, the incident has drawn significant political and public attention. Law enforcement agencies say the outcome of the forensic examination will be crucial in determining responsibility for the alleged cyber intrusion.
