Iran has reportedly destroyed a key United States military radar worth nearly $300 million during attacks in the Gulf region. According to US officials, the AN/TPY-2 radar deployed at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan was damaged and rendered inoperable during the strike. Satellite image analysis indicates that the radar system and its supporting equipment, manufactured by RTX Corporation, were completely destroyed. The radar is an essential component of the US THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) missile defense system, designed to intercept ballistic missiles at high altitudes. Defense analysts say that if the strike is confirmed to be fully successful, it could be considered one of Iran’s most significant military achievements. Currently, the United States has around eight THAAD defense systems deployed globally, including in South Korea and Guam. A single THAAD battery costs about $1 billion, with the radar itself valued at approximately $300 million. With the radar now reportedly disabled, missile defense operations may rely more heavily on the shorter-range MIM‑104 Patriot system to counter potential threats.
