The Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka, Pranay Verma, was summoned to the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry at 10 AM on Tuesday. Diplomatic sources said the summon came in light of security concerns involving Bangladesh missions in New Delhi, Kolkata, and other Indian locations.

The summons was issued by Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, during which Verma was asked to strengthen security at Bangladesh missions across India.

This is the second time in 10 days that Verma has been summoned. During the interim government period, the Indian envoy had been summoned at least six times over various incidents.

Previously, on 14 December, Verma was summoned regarding the attack on Shahid Sharif Osman Hadi, with Bangladesh requesting India’s cooperation to prevent perpetrators from fleeing to Indian territory. Concerns were also raised about provocative statements by the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from New Delhi.

The tit-for-tat summoning of high commissioners and recent protests in New Delhi have heightened tensions in Bangladesh–India bilateral relations, particularly after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) called for demonstrations at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and the Deputy High Commission in Mumbai.
