Internal Strain Within Like-Minded Political Alliance

Jamaat-e-Islami has yet to finalize seat-sharing arrangements with its like-minded political allies. Meanwhile, discussions with additional parties have begun, increasing internal tension within the alliance. Talks are reportedly ongoing with the National Citizen Party (NCP), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and Bangladesh Labor Party.

Shifting Political Alignments

The NCP emerged after the mass uprising, while parties such as LDP, JSD, and the Labor Party were long-time partners in joint movements with BNP. Recent breakdowns in those alliances have pushed these parties to explore new political equations.

Disagreements Within the Eight-Party Bloc

Previously, Jamaat and seven other like-minded parties had initiated discussions to field single candidates in all constituencies through mutual understanding. However, disputes over how many seats each party should receive have stalled progress.

Some parties insist their candidates are equally strong as Jamaat’s nominees, complicating consensus. A proposal to send neutral representatives to assess candidates based on surveys and local opinion failed to advance.

Discomfort Over Possible NCP Inclusion

Talks between Jamaat and NCP becoming public have caused unease among several alliance partners. Past experiences, including NCP’s withdrawal from joint movements, have raised doubts about its reliability among some leaders.

Leadership Downplays the Crisis

Senior leaders from Jamaat and allied parties maintain that the situation does not amount to a major crisis. They emphasize that no party wants to leave the alliance and believe issues can be resolved through dialogue.

Positions of LDP, Labor Party, and JSD

After severing long-standing ties with BNP, both LDP and the Labor Party are seeking new alliances. JSD has announced plans to contest elections independently but is still keeping alternative political options open. All three parties remain in contact with Jamaat at varying levels.

NCP and AB Party Keeping Multiple Channels Open

Both NCP and AB Party are reportedly maintaining communication with Jamaat as well as BNP. This dual engagement has caused discomfort within their newly formed reform-oriented alliance. Their final direction will largely depend on how the seat-sharing negotiations ultimately conclude.
