Citing "public interest," the Finance Ministry issues compulsory retirement orders for four top officials involved in NBR movement.
The government has sent four senior officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) into compulsory retirement, all of whom were reportedly associated with recent protest activities within the revenue authority. The Ministry of Finance's Internal Resources Division (IRD) issued separate official orders on Wednesday, July 2, confirming the decision.
The officials are Hossain Ahmed, Member (Customs Policy); Dr. Abdur Rouf, Member (VAT Policy); Alomgir Hossain, Member (Income Tax); and Shabbir Ahmed, Tax Commissioner. All four officers have served more than 25 years in public service, making them eligible for retirement under existing laws.
According to the official gazette notifications, the government made the decision in "public interest," citing relevant provisions of the Public Service Act. The language used in each notification emphasizes that the retirement orders were necessary for administrative and institutional reasons that serve the broader interest of the state.
The compulsory retirement of these top officials comes in the wake of internal movements within the NBR, which have drawn attention over recent months due to growing tensions between employees and higher authorities. Though the official statements did not directly link the retirements to any particular incident or protest, sources within the finance ministry suggest the decision is closely tied to recent dissent within the revenue board.
Officials declined to comment further on whether additional measures would follow. However, the sudden nature of these retirements has sparked considerable discussion within government circles and among revenue department staff.
This move marks a significant development in the ongoing unrest at the NBR, highlighting the government's firm stance on maintaining control over administrative discipline and loyalty within key state institutions.
