Bangladesh has lost one of its most influential and uncompromising political leaders. Begum Khaleda Zia, Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a three-time former Prime Minister, passed away early Tuesday morning at 6:00 am while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka. She was around 80 years old.
Battle with Prolonged Illness
She had been suffering from multiple chronic health conditions, including liver cirrhosis, diabetes, arthritis, and complications involving her kidneys, lungs, heart, and vision. Following a deterioration in her health, she was hospitalized on November 23 and treated under the supervision of a medical board comprising local and international specialists.

Family members and senior party leaders were present during her final moments, along with the attending medical team.
A Distinguished Political Journey
Begum Khaleda Zia was the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She served three terms in office and played a pivotal role in restoring democracy and strengthening multi-party politics in the country. Despite facing imprisonment, political persecution, and personal loss, she remained steadfast in her principles.
Early Life
Born on August 15, 1945, she later married President Ziaur Rahman. After his assassination, she entered active politics and eventually rose to lead the BNP.
State Mourning and Funeral Arrangements
The government has declared three days of national mourning. Her funeral prayer will be held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament, followed by her burial beside President Ziaur Rahman’s grave.
