After weeks of anticipation, voting in the thirteenth national parliamentary election began across the country on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. Even before sunrise, crowds started gathering in front of polling stations in different regions. As the morning progressed, those crowds turned into long queues, reflecting strong voter enthusiasm. Men and women, young and old alike were seen lining up, creating a festive and vibrant atmosphere at many centers.
In Dhaka as well as in divisional and district towns, voter turnout was noticeable from the early hours. Some voters arrived with family members, while others came in groups with neighbors. The presence of senior citizens, first-time voters, and people with disabilities—often assisted by relatives or volunteers—added to the inclusive spirit of the day.
A total of 50 political parties are contesting the election this time. Alongside major political forces, parties such as the National Citizen Party and Islami Andolon Bangladesh are also in the race. The total number of candidates stands at 2,028, including 1,755 party-affiliated contenders and 273 independent candidates. This wide range of competitors has intensified public interest in the election.
In many polling stations in the capital, long lines were visible from the outset. Reports from some centers indicated that a significant percentage of votes had already been cast within the first one and a half hours. Similar scenes were reported from outside Dhaka, with peaceful voting underway in districts across Rangpur, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions. Rural areas also witnessed encouraging voter participation.
Women voters, in particular, were prominently visible. Separate queues for women were long in several polling stations, and elderly women were seen arriving with walking sticks or with assistance to exercise their voting rights. These scenes contributed to a lively yet orderly election-day environment.
Election authorities stated that voting was proceeding smoothly in most polling centers. Although minor administrative or technical issues emerged in a few locations, they were resolved promptly. Law enforcement agencies remained on high alert to prevent any form of disorder and to ensure that voters could cast their ballots without fear.
Observers note that this election is not only about forming a new parliament but also about shaping the country’s political direction in the years ahead. The participatory and celebratory atmosphere has raised public expectations that this vote could mark a meaningful step toward political renewal.
Overall, the thirteenth national parliamentary election is being viewed as a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey. The enthusiastic turnout, peaceful conduct, and festive mood suggest a strong desire among citizens to make their voices heard through the ballot box, making this election a memorable moment in national life.
