Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, expressed his desire to return to his regular work after the next general election, scheduled for 2025. Speaking in an interview with the British magazine The Economist, he reflected on his current role and shared his vision for the nation and its youth.

The interview comes at a significant time for Bangladesh, which recently earned The Economist's "Country of the Year" title following the fall of a 15-year authoritarian regime. Dr. Yunus shared his thoughts on this recognition and discussed the challenges and opportunities ahead for the country.

When asked about his plans after the election, Dr. Yunus said, “My job was essentially taken away from me. I was brought into this role against my will. I was enjoying my work and my life when I was called back from Paris to take on this position. I would be glad to return to my regular work, which I have dedicated my life to. It’s a movement I’ve built across the globe, and young people love it.”

Dr. Yunus emphasized his commitment to empowering young people worldwide, which he described as his lifelong passion. He noted that this work resonates deeply with youth, and he looks forward to resuming those efforts once his temporary responsibilities as the Chief Advisor are fulfilled.

Addressing concerns about the threat of extremism in Bangladesh, Dr. Yunus expressed confidence in the resilience and aspirations of the nation’s youth. “I assure you that extremism will not gain ground in Bangladesh. Young people here are neutral when it comes to religion, and they are driven by a desire to build a new Bangladesh. These young people have the power to change the world. This is not just about transforming one country or another—it is about showing how strong youth can be.”

He added that focusing on the potential of young people, particularly young women, should be a national priority. “Young women have played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s transformation. We must give our attention to the dreams and aspirations of young men and women alike. They have the opportunity, the capability, and the determination to achieve their goals.”

Dr. Yunus also highlighted the contributions of three young leaders in his cabinet, describing their work as exemplary. “These young leaders are not from the last century—they belong to this one. They are as capable as their peers anywhere else in the world.”

Reflecting on the achievements of the interim government and the recognition by The Economist, Dr. Yunus reiterated his belief in the strength of Bangladesh’s youth and their ability to lead the country into a brighter future.
