Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md. Shajjat Ali announced plans to provide light weapons to traffic sergeants as part of efforts to combat street snatching. Speaking at the inauguration of the new bus services using counter and e-ticketing systems, he emphasized the need for joint efforts from both transport workers and passengers to ensure traffic discipline in the city.
On Thursday, February 6, at a ceremony organized by the Road Transport Owners' Association in Azampur, Uttara, DMP Commissioner Shajjat Ali revealed the introduction of new systems aimed at improving the traffic situation in Dhaka. He stated that in order to reduce road congestion and improve traffic discipline, it would not be enough for drivers and transport workers alone to follow the rules; the active participation of passengers and the general public would also be crucial. He further elaborated that the newly introduced counter and e-ticketing systems would help passengers board and alight from buses at designated spots, preventing them from doing so haphazardly along the roads.
The DMP Commissioner assured that Dhaka Metropolitan Police would provide full support to ensure the success of the new system. He highlighted that Dhaka, with a population of about 25 million, faces various challenges, but the authorities are committed to improving the living conditions for Dhaka residents. He emphasized that steps are being taken to prevent harassment at police stations and to ensure police services are available to citizens at their doorsteps for cases or general complaints. He urged the public to report any incidents of police harassment so that strict action could be taken against the offenders.
During the event, the DMP Commissioner also called on transport owners to provide regular monthly wages and proper employment contracts to bus drivers to ensure better management of the transport sector.
In his special address, Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Sarwar said that the implementation of the counter and e-ticketing systems would help reduce traffic congestion and improve the quality of passenger services. He confirmed that DMP would make every effort to ensure the success of the new initiative.
The Chief Speaker of the event, Md. Saiful Islam, General Secretary of the Dhaka Road Transport Owners' Association, emphasized that the new measures aim to reduce traffic jams and improve the ease of travel for passengers. He expressed confidence that with cooperation from DMP and other stakeholders, the new systems would be successful.
