BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has warned that any attempt to impose decisions without the people’s backing will undermine democracy. He made the remark on Monday afternoon while addressing a discussion meeting organized by the Bangladesh Disabled Welfare Association in Uttara, Dhaka.

Speaking at the event, Khosru emphasized that no democratic process can truly succeed without active public participation and trust. He pointed out that every political party must seek a mandate directly from the people, as democracy cannot thrive without their approval and engagement.

“Democracy is built on confidence between the people and political institutions. If political parties fail to respect this principle, the foundation of democracy will weaken,” he noted.

He further stressed that maintaining unity among citizens is crucial for protecting the spirit of the constitution. Any effort to create division within society, he argued, would ultimately amount to a violation of constitutional values.

Reiterating his stance, Khosru stated that public endorsement is not just desirable but indispensable in the democratic process. “If anyone attempts to move forward without the support of the people, it will directly obstruct democracy,” he said.

Turning his attention to inclusivity, the BNP leader pledged that his party will work for the empowerment and capacity building of persons with special needs in the coming years. He called for greater financial, moral, and humanitarian investment to ensure equal opportunities for them, stressing that the state has a responsibility to provide resources where necessary.

According to Khosru, investing in marginalized communities is not simply a matter of welfare but a vital step toward building a just and sustainable society. “The government must recognize the specific needs of people and allocate resources accordingly. This is how we can create a Bangladesh where no one is left behind,” he added.

The BNP politician’s comments come at a time when debates over democratic participation and citizen engagement remain at the forefront of national politics. With growing concerns about transparency, inclusivity, and public trust in governance, his remarks highlight the importance of grounding political activities in the will of the people.

The discussion event, hosted by the Bangladesh Disabled Welfare Association, focused on issues of empowerment and inclusion for people with disabilities. Speakers underscored the importance of creating opportunities that allow them to contribute meaningfully to society.

In his closing remarks, Khosru reiterated that democracy cannot flourish in isolation from the people it serves. “Public support is not an optional element of democracy—it is the essence of it. Without it, the democratic journey cannot move forward,” he said.
