Bangladesh's interim Chief Adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, stated that justice cannot be served by expelling anyone from the country. He emphasized that while efforts should be made to persuade those who refuse to accept certain realities, individuals who incite chaos must be brought under the rule of law.
During a meeting on February 10 with the families of the martyrs and those injured during the July 2024 uprising, Dr. Yunus addressed the concerns of the youth who had been hurt during the protests. He remarked that authoritarian figures have not left, and it is crucial for the people, particularly those in rural areas, to understand that the behavior of such individuals must change. He stressed that it was not through violence that this change could be achieved.
Dr. Yunus further explained that justice is an ongoing process, and while people may demand immediate action, it would be unjust to pursue quick judgments. The core of justice, he noted, is fairness, and the judicial process must continue in order to ensure that those responsible for crimes are held accountable with sufficient evidence. He warned that if society resorts to injustice in the pursuit of justice, there would be no difference between the perpetrators and those seeking justice.
He assured the families present that those who are criminally responsible will be judged accordingly, but it is essential to bring those who are not guilty back onto the right path by encouraging them to acknowledge their mistakes. Dr. Yunus stressed that although many had endured oppression in the past, the country belongs to everyone, and justice must be sought without resorting to expulsions. Those who refuse to comply must be gently persuaded, while those who plan disorder should be dealt with under the law.
