The Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of the BNP, held a mass rally in Shahbagh on Sunday, August 3, in memory of the martyrs of the 2024 July-August uprising. Uniquely, following the conclusion of the event, JCD members took the initiative to clean the entire rally ground themselves.

The rally officially began at 3:15 PM with a recitation from the Holy Quran. BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, joined the gathering virtually from London as the chief guest. He addressed the attendees, emphasizing the importance of upholding the values for which pro-democracy activists had sacrificed their lives.

A large number of JCD members from across the country gathered at Shahbagh to pay their respects to the fallen heroes of the democratic movement. The event was attended by senior leaders of the BNP, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, as well as several former student leaders and veteran politicians of the party.

Following the rally, JCD activists immediately began collecting waste materials such as placards, banners, plastic bottles, and other items left behind at the venue. They placed the waste into bags and deposited them in designated disposal areas. Rather than chanting slogans after the event, participants focused on contributing to the cleanup drive.

The voluntary cleanup effort lasted for about an hour and was carried out along the streets adjacent to the PG Hospital near Shahbagh, where the rally took place. Members from various city and thana-level units of Chhatra Dal took part in the initiative.

Sabuj, a member of JCD from Shahjahanpur Thana, who was seen sweeping the road near the hospital, said that it was their moral duty to show respect to the martyrs not only through speeches and slogans but also through responsible actions. "We fight for democracy, but we also have a responsibility to keep our country clean. This is our way of showing respect to the sacrifices of our heroes and promoting a culture of civic responsibility," he said.

The event, held in remembrance of those who gave their lives during the fight for the restoration of democracy, was peaceful and well-attended. The post-event cleanup by JCD members has drawn attention as a symbolic gesture of accountability and a call for a cleaner, more responsible political culture in Bangladesh.
