The Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has stated that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party has proposed that the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami take up the post of Deputy Speaker as the opposition party in the National Parliament. He made the remarks on Monday while speaking to journalists at the Secretariat.

According to the minister, the first session of the 13th National Parliament will begin with a presidential address in accordance with constitutional provisions. He emphasized that all parliamentary proceedings will strictly follow the Constitution.

Salahuddin Ahmed explained that BNP, as a major political force, has offered the Deputy Speaker position to Jamaat-e-Islami in its role as the opposition party. He described the move as a political decision that falls within parliamentary practice and democratic norms.

He further clarified that members of the Constitutional Reform Council are not eligible to participate in parliamentary sessions. Only elected Members of Parliament have the authority to attend and engage in legislative activities. Therefore, no unconstitutional matters can be introduced within the House.

While discussions about constitutional reform may continue in political arenas as part of democratic rights, the minister stressed that parliamentary debates must remain within constitutional boundaries.

Political observers believe that the proposal regarding the Deputy Speaker position may reshape dynamics within the opposition camp. The role of Jamaat-e-Islami in Parliament, BNP’s strategic positioning, and the broader parliamentary equation are likely to influence the political landscape in the coming days.
