Ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has almost finalized seat-sharing arrangements with its alliance partners and like-minded parties involved in the joint movement.
For the first time, BNP has officially announced candidates from partner parties as part of the seat-sharing deal. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the party chairperson’s political office in Gulshan.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that relations with alliance partners have deepened and that further seat-sharing decisions will be announced gradually.
As part of the agreement, four seats have been allocated to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, where BNP will not nominate any candidates. Disciplinary action will be taken against party members who violate this decision.
The allocated seats and candidates are:
-
Sylhet-5: Maulana Mohammad Ubaidullah Farooq
-
Brahmanbaria-2: Maulana Junayed Al Habib
-
Nilphamari-1: Maulana Manzurul Islam Afendi
-
Narayanganj-4: Mufti Monir Hossain Qasemi
Jamiat candidates will contest the election using their own party symbol, the Date Palm Tree.
According to BNP policy:
-
BNP will not field candidates in seats allocated to partners
-
Partner parties will contest only in the seats assigned to them
BNP has so far announced potential candidates in 272 constituencies. The remaining 28 seats will be finalized through negotiations with alliance partners. Discussions regarding around 10 additional seats are at an advanced stage.
Several leaders from smaller parties have either joined BNP by dissolving their parties or are considering doing so. However, another key ally, Gono Odhikar Parishad, has decided to prepare for elections in all constituencies under its own symbol after failing to secure a seat-sharing agreement.
