Gunman Opens Fire in Park Avenue Building, Later Dies by Suicide; FBI and NYPD Launch Joint Investigation
A tragic shooting incident in New York City’s Manhattan left five people dead, including a Bangladeshi-origin NYPD officer, after a gunman opened fire inside a commercial building on Park Avenue. According to the New York Police Department, the shooter, later identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, eventually took his own life after the rampage.
The incident occurred on Monday evening (July 28) around 6:40 PM local time, when Tamura entered a high-rise building at 345 Park Avenue and began shooting. The building houses offices of major organizations including the National Football League (NFL), investment firm Blackstone, and banking giant JP Morgan Chase.
Officer Didarul Islam, originally from a Bangladeshi family, was among the victims. He is survived by his wife and two sons. Police officials stated that Islam was killed during an exchange of fire in the building’s lobby area. The shooter then ascended to the 33rd floor of the building, where he was later found dead on a stairwell, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A rifle was recovered at the scene.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the shooter acted alone and had been neutralized. Authorities stressed that there is no further threat to the public. However, law enforcement presence remained heavy around the scene as investigations continued.
Shortly before 7 PM, the NYPD issued a public alert via social media urging citizens to avoid the area surrounding Park Avenue and East 51st Street. Mayor Eric Adams also addressed the situation, advising New Yorkers to remain vigilant and avoid stepping outside if they were near the vicinity of the shooting.
The FBI’s New York Field Office confirmed it was assisting the NYPD at the site and helping coordinate emergency response efforts. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that a command post had been established by the Southern District of New York to manage the ongoing investigation.
Following the incident, the NFL issued an internal alert to its employees inside the building instructing them to shelter in place. The message urged them not to exit the premises and to stay hidden until law enforcement had secured their specific floor. Employees were also advised to silence their mobile devices to avoid drawing attention.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing individuals leaving the building with their hands raised as law enforcement evacuated the premises floor by floor. The surrounding streets were cordoned off, with a significant deployment of emergency services and heavily armed officers.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed concern over the attack and offered prayers for the NYPD and the city of New York, calling for peace and resilience during the difficult time.
According to Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization that tracks firearm-related incidents across the United States, this shooting marks the 254th mass shooting in the country this year. The organization defines a mass shooting as any incident where at least four individuals, excluding the shooter, are shot or killed.
As investigations continue, authorities are yet to determine the motive behind the attack. Both city and federal officials have pledged full support for the victims' families and ongoing efforts to address gun violence nationwide.
