With a 2-1 victory in Yangon, Bangladesh await the Bahrain-Turkmenistan result to confirm their qualification.

Bangladesh’s women’s football team moved one step closer to securing a spot in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup after a historic 2-1 victory over hosts Myanmar in the qualifying round on Wednesday. The match, held at Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, saw Rituporna Chakma emerge as the star of the night, scoring both goals for Bangladesh.

The result is significant as Myanmar, ranked 73 places higher than Bangladesh in the FIFA rankings, came into the game as strong favorites. However, Bangladesh, under the guidance of head coach Tom Saintfiet Butler, delivered a determined and tactically sound performance to secure a crucial win.

This victory follows an even more commanding performance earlier in the qualifiers, where Bangladesh thrashed Bahrain—ranked 36 places higher—by a stunning margin of 7-0. These two wins have positioned Bangladesh as the front-runner in the group, with their qualification for the main tournament now hanging on the outcome of the Bahrain vs. Turkmenistan match later today.

The group dynamics now favor Bangladesh. If Bahrain and Turkmenistan draw in their match scheduled for 6:30 PM local time, Bangladesh will automatically qualify for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Even if Bahrain wins, Bangladesh will still secure the top spot in the group due to their head-to-head advantage, having defeated Bahrain earlier in the tournament.

Bangladesh’s potential qualification marks a milestone for women's football in the country, signaling the emergence of a competitive squad capable of challenging higher-ranked teams on the continental stage. The team’s performance so far reflects growing confidence, strategic discipline, and individual brilliance—key ingredients for success at the Asian level.
