New simulator enhances air traffic controller training and marks a step towards technological self-reliance
The Bangladesh Air Force officially inaugurated its indigenously developed Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower Digital Simulator on Wednesday, July 16, at the School of Air Traffic Services, located at BAF Base Bashar in Dhaka. The event was graced by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, BBP, OSP, GUP, NSWC, psc, who attended as the chief guest and formally inaugurated the simulator.
During his visit, the Air Chief Marshal commended the School of Air Traffic Services’ Research and Development Project team for their achievement in developing the simulator entirely with local expertise and resources. He noted that this initiative represents a significant milestone in the Bangladesh Air Force’s journey towards technological self-sufficiency.
The newly constructed simulator is specifically designed to enhance the training capabilities for air traffic controllers and tower assistants. By replicating real-world scenarios through digital simulation, the system aims to improve operational proficiency while also reducing dependency on foreign technologies. It is expected to play a crucial role in advancing the Bangladesh Air Force’s overall effectiveness, operational readiness, and technical competence.
Following the formal inauguration, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan received a detailed briefing on the various features and functionalities of the simulator. He then observed a live demonstration showcasing its capabilities in managing different air traffic control scenarios.
Officials involved in the project highlighted that the simulator was developed under the direct supervision of the School of Air Traffic Services using entirely homegrown solutions. The initiative aligns with the Bangladesh Air Force’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on imported technologies and promote domestic innovation within its technical and training divisions.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several distinguished guests, including principal staff officers from Air Headquarters, the Vice-Chancellor of the Bangladesh Aviation and Aerospace University, the Air Officer Commanding of BAF Base Bashar, the Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), as well as other senior officers from the Bangladesh Air Force.
The presence of both military and civilian aviation leaders at the event underlined the simulator’s importance not just for the Air Force but for the country’s wider aviation sector. The Bangladesh Air Force views such projects as essential for strengthening its operational infrastructure while fostering greater collaboration between defense and civil aviation institutions.
The Bangladesh Air Force continues to prioritize modernization and self-reliance through similar research and development initiatives, aiming to ensure that its personnel remain at the forefront of global aviation standards using technologies developed within the country.
