National Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam has alleged that efforts are being made to overturn the public mandate obtained through a referendum. He warned that using the judiciary to implement any partisan agenda would lead to serious consequences.
Speaking at an iftar gathering in the Panchlaish area of Chattogram, Nahid Islam stated that both the election and the formation of the current government were based on the “July Charter” and the outcome of the referendum. According to him, there are now attempts to invalidate or undermine that mandate through court proceedings.
As the Opposition Chief Whip, he claimed that what he described as “fascist forces” remain active in Chattogram and must be politically resisted. He asserted that the National Citizen Party cannot coexist with the Bangladesh Awami League, adding that party activists would resist the reopening of Awami League offices in different areas.
Nahid Islam also confirmed that his party will participate in the upcoming local government elections. At the same time, he urged the government to swiftly implement the public verdict delivered through the referendum. His remarks signaled a firm political stance and suggested rising tensions between rival political forces.
During the event, he and party activists chanted slogans emphasizing Chattogram over Delhi, a move observers interpret as carrying symbolic political messaging.
Political analysts believe that such statements concerning the referendum and the judiciary could spark fresh debate in the country’s political landscape, particularly regarding the independence of the courts and their role in politically sensitive matters
