A violent incident unfolded in Jamalpur on Monday following a street rally organized by the National Citizen Party (NCP), resulting in injuries to Safayat Turjo, a local leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM at Fouzderi Mor in the municipal area shortly after the conclusion of the NCP’s rally.
According to Turjo, who currently serves as the joint secretary of the Jamalpur district chapter of the student movement, he was suddenly attacked while standing near the intersection with a group of friends. He alleges that the assailants, reportedly led by NCP district committee member Abid Sourav, surrounded him in a group of 20 to 25 individuals and began physically assaulting him without provocation.
Turjo was later taken to a private hospital for treatment, where he remains under medical care. He claims the assault stemmed from a recent Facebook post he had made, in which he accused Abid Sourav of extortion. Turjo believes the attack was a retaliatory act prompted by that post.
Nafisa Diya, a former leader of the district chapter of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and a friend of the victim, corroborated Turjo’s account. She stated that she was with Turjo and another friend at the time of the incident. According to her, a young man approached Turjo and casually asked how he was doing. Moments later, a large group appeared and launched the attack without warning.
In response to the allegations, NCP leader Abid Sourav denied any involvement. He stated that at the time of the alleged assault, he was at the Circuit House with senior members of the party. Sourav said he only learned of the incident later and went to the hospital to check on Turjo along with central party leaders. He claimed that Turjo was deliberately spreading misinformation and defaming him, and that he had no connection to the assault.
Jamalpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Faisal Md. Atik stated that no formal complaint regarding the incident had been received yet. He added that appropriate legal action would be taken if an official report is filed.
The incident has sparked concern among local civil society groups and student activists, who have called for a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure accountability and prevent future violence tied to political rivalries.
