At least 11 construction workers were injured when a section of the roof of a dormitory building under construction at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University collapsed on Thursday, July 31. The incident occurred around 4 PM while concrete was being poured on the balcony of the building’s second floor.

Eyewitnesses reported that the collapse happened shortly after the concrete work began on the southeast corner of the second floor. The structure reportedly became unstable within minutes, resulting in a sudden and forceful collapse. Workers involved in the construction fell from the second floor and sustained injuries, particularly to their backs, knees, and waists. The injured were quickly rescued and transported to Trishal Upazila Health Complex for medical treatment.

One of the workers involved in the project recounted that the concrete work had resumed after lunch when they suddenly heard a sound followed by the immediate collapse of the roof section.

Following the incident, concerns have been raised about the quality of construction materials used in the project. Several students of the university have questioned the integrity of the materials, alleging that substandard rods and concrete components were used. They also claimed that some areas had makeshift reinforcements using patched rods, bamboo poles instead of iron supports, and even jute twine to bind structures—methods seen as dangerously inadequate.

Many have expressed frustration that such irregularities could occur despite the university assigning a site engineer to every construction project. Repeated attempts to contact the project director, Syed Mofassirul Islam, for comment went unanswered.

University Proctor Dr. Mahbubur Rahman confirmed that he rushed to the scene upon hearing of the incident and oversaw the emergency response, including the transfer of injured workers to the hospital.

Acting Registrar Professor Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman stated that a six-member investigation committee has been formed to look into the incident. He also noted that a formal letter will be sent to the contractor involved in the project.

The ten-storey dormitory is being constructed by the contracting firm CSI.
