A total of 60,000 army personnel will be deployed across the country during the upcoming national parliamentary elections, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam announced on Monday. He made the statement in response to a question at a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
Earlier that day, a high-level review meeting on national security and election preparations was held at the state guesthouse Jamuna, chaired by Chief Adviser Yunus. The meeting focused on the overall law and order situation and the readiness of security agencies ahead of the elections.
Speaking at the press briefing following the meeting, Shafiqul Alam shared key insights into the government’s preparations for the polls. He stated that as part of the pre-election strategy, around 150,000 police officers will undergo specialized training during the months of September, October, and November. This initiative is aimed at equipping law enforcement with the necessary skills to manage election-related activities and maintain peace.
The press secretary emphasized that special attention is being given to strengthening coordination among various law enforcement agencies to ensure a smooth and secure election process. He reiterated that the government is taking a comprehensive approach to address potential threats and disturbances during the election period.
According to Alam, authorities have been instructed to identify polling stations that may be vulnerable or categorized as hotspots in advance. District-level situation reports will be collected regularly to monitor developments on the ground. These reports are expected to play a crucial role in preempting violence and guiding deployment strategies.
In addition, decisions have been made regarding potential reshuffling within the election-time administration. These changes are intended to uphold neutrality and ensure that the electoral process remains free from undue influence.
The Chief Adviser’s office has been closely working with law enforcement agencies to assess risks and implement preventive measures. This includes early identification of conflict-prone zones and comprehensive deployment plans that involve not only the military but also other forces such as police, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The press secretary reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holding a peaceful, transparent, and fair election. He said that detailed operational guidelines and protocols for election security will be finalized in the coming weeks.
